AI activities for students are exploding across classrooms right now — but I do not believe that all of them are created equal!
Teachers don’t need more “cheat sheet” tools or generic writing bots.
Chat GPT won’t instantly guarantee meaningful, creative activities that spark reflection, empathy and critical thinking always. And when we’re short on prep time, we need trusted and actionable resources.
I wanted to design a quick guide for busy teachers who still want to use AI to go deeper in their novel studies.
Also, I know how difficult teachers’ lives are: these five AI-based activities have been created to turn those “I have no lesson plan” days into opportunities for actual learning.
And more importantly, I hope they bring some fun and lightness to your students’ day!
Are There Really Benefits for Using AI in the Classroom?
When used thoughtfully, I have seen AI enhance learning and prep instead of replacing it.
These AI activities for students have been created to address:
Critical thinking and creativity — students interpret, question and reimagine. Your engagement and supervision is fundamental for the success of the activity (but no prep required!).
Build digital literacy and discernment — they learn how to evaluate AI outputs critically. It is time we start exposing AI as a tool, not a crutch to our students! They will have to grapple with this technology more and more as they grow older.
Support reflection and empathy — by analyzing human choices and emotions. Reading, writing and literature.
Save planning time — teachers can run these activities with minimal setup, yet still feel proud of the learning happening.
Will AI Replace Teachers?
AI cannot and never will replace teachers. But it can enhance teaching; it all depends on how it’s used and …the teacher!
Swivl’s 2024 analysis emphasizes that the role of AI in education is to “extend teachers’ capacity, not erase it.”
Education, in my opinion, is much more than developing reading and writing skills. One of my favourite educators of the 20th Century, Fr. Luigi Guissani – an Italian priest from Lombardy (where I live!) – phrases it thus: “education is a communication of one’s self, of the way one relates to reality.“
As confirmed by the 2024 World Economic Forum report, artificial intelligence “can automate tasks, not relationships.”
However, as with all technological advancements, AI can be used to help teachers work more efficiently and show up more present and energized for their students. And perhaps even improve the quality of their teaching!
If you teach reading and writing at middle school, these 5 AI activities for students promise to use AI to teach complex skills in an easy (and no-prep!) way.
They can be used at any point of the school year, preferably when you are reading a short story or novel. But if you’re not – that’s ok! They can still be used after a novel study or if you have not read a text with your students lately.

What do these 5 AI Activities for Students Actually Offer?
Critical Thinking – One-Quote Debate
Spark quick classroom debates with powerful quotes from literature. Students will argue for or against a statement, practicing argumentative skills and deep discussion.Empathy – Character on Trial
Bring your favorite book characters to the courtroom! Students will act as prosecution and defense, examining motivations, morality, and the impact of choices.
Creativity – Make It a Metaphor
Students practice figurative language by turning people, characters and even classmates (!) into metaphors. Simple, fun and useful for teaching literary devices!Writing Skills – AI Character Roast
Students describe a character, then feed it into AI to get a playful roast. The class evaluates accuracy, humor and textual evidence — a perfect descriptive-writing warm-up.
Literary Analysis – AI Genre Swap
Students rewrite a dramatic scene in a different genre (mystery, comedy, sci-fi) using AI. They compare tones and themes, seeing how word choice changes meaning.
Each activity is flexible enough for a full 40- to 60-minute class or can be shortened for quick engagement when plans fall through.
